History

The Journal of Irish Archaeology (JIA) was established in 1983 as the successor to the Irish Archaeological Research Forum of which five volumes had been published betwen 1974 and 1978. Initially the JIA was not affiliated to a particular institution. The first three volumes were edited by Brian Scott of the Ulster Museum. In 1987 he was succeeded by Raghnall Ó Floinn of the National Museum of Ireland who edited Volumes 4-6.

Prof. William O’Brien, then of NUI Galway, took over in 1996 and edited Volumes 7-11. Towards the end of his tenure as editor, he opened up discussions with the newly-formed Institute of Archaeologists of Ireland (IAI) about the possibility of adopting the JIA as the official academic publication of the Institute. This proposal was approved by the IAI in November 2002. The Board of Directors of the IAI serves as the Editorial Board for the Journal and assists the editor in determining its content.

From 2003 to 2007 (Volumes 12-16) the Journal remained at NUI Galway under the editorship of Conor Newman. Since 2004 it has been published on behalf of the IAI by Wordwell Press. In April 2007 the IAI approved Conor Newman’s proposal that from then on the editorship would rotate between the four main archaeology departments/schools in Irish universities on a biannual basis from NUI Galway to UCC to QUB to UCD.
